Telic Engineering Ltd received an assignment from MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH to support them on their retrofit project at the combined cycle power plant (HKW) in Kassel, Germany.

MTU is a licensed service depot for GE LM2500, LM2500 Plus and LM6000 gas turbines. Heizkraftwerk (HKW) Kassel is a  combined heat and power plant in the south of Kassel, Germany. The plant consists of two natural gas-fired combined cycle plants and a steam turbine system for the combined generation of electricity and district heating.

The retrofit project consisted primarily of upgrading the gasturbine to a GE LM2500+G4 DLE turbine, exchanging the gear box, upgrading and refurbishing the air filter house and upgrading the Woodward MicroNet Plus control system.

The GE LM2500+G4 DLE upgrade results in heat rate improvement and increased power output.

The Woodward MicroNet Plus upgrade contains the latest control hardware technology, fuel metering system and fuel control software with associated improvements.

The scope of this support consisted of cold commissioning of the control and instrumentation, after the installation, which involved energizing equipment, point to point checks, loop checks, and calibrations including troubleshooting and resolving faults found.

The result of this assignment was that MTU was ready to continue into hot commissioning and start-up and fulfill their next milestones towards their customer on time.
